Ghostscript Printer Driver For Mac
Dear All, I am trying to effect a print server solution for a Mac OS9 user but I am completely unfamiliar with Mac S/W. In my setup the OS9 machine prints via lpd to a Linux server which uses Ghostscript to render the Postscript from the Mac for forwarding to an HP1100 printer.
The problem occurs when PDF documents printed on the Mac under Acrobat Reader use embedded fonts. The Mac's printing system has been tried with several of its resident Apple Laserwriter drivers but without a solution. Using Acrobat Reader under Linux to convert the PDF file to Postscript, gives output which renders properly with Ghostscript. The other peculiarity is that a printer with embedded Postscript support (ie. Apple Laserwriter 12/600PS) prints the OS9 O/P OK.
I've put an example PDF file on and the OS9 output on The following errors are generated by Ghostscript with outputfromos9.ps, Can't find (or can't open) font file /usr/share/ghostscript/fonts/BMFPHN+MathematicalPi-One. I've put an example PDF file on and the OS9 output on That file starts like this:%!PS-Adobe-3.0%%Title: (DutyPRB2004)%%Creator: (Acrobat Reader 5.0: LaserWriter 8 Z1-8.7)%%CreationDate: (3:56 pm Wednesday, February 9, 2005)%%For: (- REDACTED -)%%Pages: 4%%DocumentFonts:%%DocumentNeededFonts:%%DocumentSuppliedFonts: So any software that tries to determine the font requirements of this PS file by inspecting its DSC comments is going to think the file doesn't need or include any fonts at all. I suspect that's the root of the problem here, although I may be wrong. I don't know, but have a suspicion that the lack of font requirement comments may be related to the fact that you're printing via lp, but that could also be wrong. I've hardly used lp on Macs at all. Do you have Acrobat itself on the Mac, as opposed to just Reader? It would be interesting to see what happened if you exported the PDF file to PS with that and then submitted that as a job via lp.
I expect that the PS file would have correct%%DocumentFonts:, etc. Comments and the job would print fine. Your PDF file does include embedded subsets of the fonts in question, as does the PS file, so it seems to me that the question is why the PS output has such bogus DSC comments. Fix that, and I suspect the problem goes away. Does this Mac have the ability to print to any PS printer other than this linux/gs print server? It would be interesting to see its PS output when it thinks it's printing via something other than lp. I expect that would also have correct font comments.
You might consider installing netatalk on the linux machine and using that to make its lp queues available to Macs via PAP, although that's kind of a hassle to support just one Mac. Agreed but it probably would not help. The problem seems to be in the Mac's PS driver. Except that Mac PS drivers don't normally produce PS files with empty%%DocumentFonts:, etc. I've been using them in the printing biz for 20 years, have looked at lots and lots of PS files produced with them, and have never seen one like that.

I've seen a few where the DSC font comments were manifestly wrong, but never one where they were empty. The slightly strange thing is that, as I noted in my original post, the Apple Laserwriter 12/600PS's firmware does handle the Mac produced PS OK. The PostScript file does include the fonts it requires (except for some Times and Helvetica that can be expected to be available on most PS printers), so if it all that happens is that it's executed, it should work fine. That's why I think the problem is related to some software trying to determine the file's font requirements from its DSC comments.
