Solved: Support For Mac

/ Comments off

A notification popped up on my screen today that said (I think - it disappeared fairly quickly) that box would drop support for MacOS 10.9.5 as of 1 August 2016 (before the expected release of Sierra, MacOS 10.12). I see that your policy is to support the last two OS releases so apparently 10.9.5 support, being the third most recent, has been an exception (although I will note that one of your primary competitors supports back to 10.6.8 and box.com still supports the much older Windows 7). My question is what does it mean when support ends for MacOS 10.9.5?

Will the Box Sync app stop working immediately, or will I just no longer receive automatic updates to Box Sync and it will stop working at some indefinite point in the future? The end of OS support will presumably affect support for the associated version of Safari, but I assume I will still be able to access my files at box.com using Firefox or Chrome, since I can update these browsers to the latest version even on an older OS. I am on 10.9.5 and will not be updating my OS by 1 Aug, so may have to reduce my use of box.com if Box Sync will no longer work. Per, it is Box's policy to support the two, latest, released versions of an operating system.

As the article states, ' Each time a new version is released for general availability, Box begins supporting the update and stops supporting the third-oldest major version.' With the expected release of Mac OS 10.12 (Sierra) later this year, that will mean the end of support for 10.9.5.

Although the Box Sync applicaiton may still continue to function, any issues that do arise will not be supported. This is also stated in our EOL Notice. A relevant extract follows: ' In the month prior to the EOL date, users will see an in - product notification informing them that support for 10.9 will end soon and that they s hould update their OS. Following the EOL date, users will still be able to access Box Sync on 10.9 but will be entirely unsupported by Box, including all security patches.'

Brent, thanks for the reply. The key piece of info is in the EOL Notice: ' Following the EOL date, users will still be able to access Box Sync on 10.9 but will be entirely unsupported by Box, including all security patches.'

Mac Support Number

Which means it will continue to work for an unknown period of time, albeit without security udpates. I had found the first article you cited which does not make this clear, but I had not found the second article, the EOL Notice. The warning that pops up on my computer (which I cannot quote exactly as it does not persist) seemed to imply that I absolutely had to upgrade to retain functionality. To my knowledge Box is the first major piece of productivity sofware to drop 10.9 support. Some corporations have 'standardized' on 10.9 except for hardware that requires a newer OS. Of course this may change once Apple stops security updates for 10.9, which will likely happen in a few months upon the release of 10.12. It is certainly Box's perogative to drop support for 10.9, but Box may be just a bit too far ahead of the curve here, and may drive a some small portion of their customers to competitors.
